WHAT IS ZACHARY SOAPS?

Zachary Soaps is a project inspired by my travels to Kenya, Africa. I was fortunate enough to take a trip with a team of doctors to a clinic where we would volunteer. Being the only non-medical team member, I kept busy by talking to the Kenyan translators and learning as much as I could about their country. A major problem in Kenya is the inability for young people to get educated. There is so much poverty, making it hard to afford schooling. A Kenyan minister told me that he believed if more people could get educated, Kenya could grow to be a more prosperous country. I started thinking about what I could do to make others aware of this issue. On one of the last days at the clinic, a man named Zachary came up to me asking if I knew how to make soap. I did not know at the time, but I made it my mission to get him the instructions. I asked my fellow team members, and with their help, I supplied him with a soap recipe and some money to get started. With the new knowledge of soap making, Zachary would be able to earn a bit more money, maybe to fund his own education. This experience led me to the idea of Zachary Soaps. I decided to create a brand of soaps that would help spread the awareness of the education crisis in Kenya. This is a fictional project, but maybe one day it could be reality. With the purchase of each soap, profits would go to providing an education for the young men and women of Kenya. The soaps are inspired by the sights, smells, and textures I saw on my journey.

The hand lettering and color choices were inspired by the painted buildings lining the dirt roads of Kenya. The ingredients are ones readily available throughout the country.
